In recent times, I’ve heard many people make assumptions about the role of an engineer. It got me thinking about how much we still need to educate people on who an engineer really is and how often the role is mistaken for that of a technologist.

Who is an Engineer?
An engineer is someone who applies science and mathematics to analyze problems and design solutions or improve existing ones.
You can be an engineer in different fields like mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, civil engineering, and so on. But regardless of the field, the primary task of an engineer is designing and developing solutions.
Who is a Technologist?
A technologist also applies science and math but focuses more on the practical application of engineering designs.
They work hands-on, building and implementing physical solutions based on the analysis and designs created often by engineers. Their job is to make sure ideas work in real life.
Where the Roles Overlap
These two roles often overlap.
As a technologist, you need a design and analysis to work with before you build and implement. And as an engineer, you want to build a solution that’s based on solid design and analysis.
Think of it this way: there’s the architect, and there are the bricklayers. The architect designs the building layout and plan, while the bricklayers bring that plan to life.
The same logic applies to engineers and technologists; you don’t just build a practical solution without having solid data, design, and analysis (typically provided by an engineer) to show that it will work. Otherwise, you risk wasting time, money, and resources.
That said, technologists sometimes contribute to the design process as well, but their focus is generally more hands-on and practical.
