A few years ago, in a class of 20 science students, some aspiring to be medical doctors, laboratory scientists, and engineers, I noticed something interesting. Most students who wanted to study engineering believed the only requirement was being good at mathematics.
Even today, many still think, “If I’m good at math, I can study engineering.” But that’s only part of the truth. So, what exactly should you know before studying engineering?
What is Engineering?
Engineering is the application of scientific and mathematical principles to solve societal problems. From that definition alone, you can see it’s not just about solving quadratic or simultaneous equations. If that’s all it took, then a calculator could replace an engineer.
Engineering requires applicative mathematics, understanding why you’re solving an equation and how it impacts real-life situations. For example:
- We “find x” in engineering not for the sake of it, but because x might be the critical measurement that keeps a bridge standing strong.
- You might need calculus to analyze fluid flow or design a more efficient piping system.
The mathematics you learn in secondary school is just the beginning. The real challenge is applying it alongside physics, chemistry, geography, and sometimes biology—especially in fields like biomedical engineering.
Things to Know Before Studying Engineering
If you are planning to pursue engineering in Nigeria or anywhere else, here are key things you should know:
- Engineering is not just about mathematics: It’s about how we apply mathematical equations to solve societal problems.
- Different engineering fields exist: Civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, aerospace, software engineering, and more. Some roles may overlap, but each discipline has unique focus areas.
- Drawing and design skills are important: Engineers create and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and blueprints.
- It’s a 5-year course in Nigeria; be prepared for both academic and practical rigor.
- No equation is useless: that formula you derived in 200 Level may solve a real-life problem in your future career.
- Teamwork is essential: Engineering projects often involve collaborating with other engineers, technicians, and even non-engineers.
- A problem-solving mindset is key: Many challenges in engineering don’t have straightforward answers.
- Practical work is as important as theory: Labs, workshops, and fieldwork bridge the gap between classroom concepts and real-world applications.
- Engineering is global: The skills and principles you learn can take you beyond Nigeria’s borders.
- Safety is a core responsibility: Always prioritize human and environmental safety.
Engineering is much more than being “good at math.” It’s a profession that blends creativity, technical knowledge, and problem-solving skills to make life better. If mathematics is your only strong point, you might want to study mathematics itself. But if you’re ready to combine math with innovation, teamwork, and practical application, then engineering might just be the perfect path for you.
